Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is out today on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, Activision has confirmed. It is the first new Modern Warfare game in three years, and the Switch 2 version launches on the same day as the others.
The game is not available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, which means anyone still on an older console will need to upgrade to play it.
What time does Modern Warfare 4 unlock?
Reports point to a single worldwide launch rather than a midnight unlock in each country. That puts the release at 9pm Pacific time on 22 October, which is midnight on the US east coast, 5am in the UK, 6am in central Europe, 9:30am in India and 3pm in Sydney.
Activision itself has only said that play times may vary by time zone, so it is worth checking the store page on your console if the game does not appear straight away.
Players who pre-ordered a digital copy have already been able to play the campaign since 16 October as part of the campaign early access offer.
How much does it cost?
In the US the Standard Edition costs $69.99, while the Vault Edition costs $99.99. Prices in the UK and Europe vary by platform, so check your local store before buying.
The Vault Edition adds two operator packs, a collection of signature weapons, the Season 1 BlackCell pass and bonus items for the DMZ mode. Players who already own the Standard Edition can upgrade to Vault later for an extra fee.
Unlike some recent entries in the series, Modern Warfare 4 is not on Game Pass at launch. Activision has said it will join the service in the 2027 holiday season.
What is the story about?
The campaign opens with North Korea launching a full-scale invasion of South Korea. Players follow Private Park, a young South Korean soldier fighting on a collapsing front line, as well as a familiar face in Captain Price.
Price is now operating outside the law and pursuing a personal mission of revenge, which draws him into a much wider conflict. The story moves beyond Korea to New York, Paris and Mumbai.
What’s new in multiplayer?
Multiplayer launches with 12 core maps and a redesigned Create-a-Class system. One of the more unusual additions is Kill Block, a modular training facility that can be arranged in more than 500 ways and supports both small 3v3 matches and larger 10v10 Gunfight games.
DMZ also returns as an extraction mode in which squads try to recover military technology from a shifting exclusion zone. Season 1 content is due to follow shortly after launch.
How does it play on Switch 2?
The Switch 2 version has been built by Digital Legends alongside Infinity Ward, and Activision says it supports mouse-style aiming with the Joy-Con 2 controllers, gyro aiming, the Pro Controller and handheld play.
It also supports cross-play and cross-progression with other platforms. Online multiplayer requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and an Activision account.
How much space do I need?
On PC the game needs around 115GB of free space on an SSD, and PC players have been able to download it in advance. Console players should check the size on their store page, as it varies by platform and by which modes are installed.
